The Future?
Attended a meeting of LT Scotland’s International Education coordinators in Glasgow today. Among the keynotes was a presentation which included the following thought-provoking slide.
To Do
1. I’d like you to take some time to view it, and add a comment to this post (below)on what slide (or slides) you found most interesting, and why? (PS Health Warning-ask yourself are all these facts true; are there any you find hard to believe? Let me know!)

2. We are now looking at Brazil; we are interested in how it compares to the USA. Make sure you have completed the climate graph for Manuas on page 5 of your booklet. Manuas is a large city on the Amazon. We have looked at Phoenix; now write up in your jotter how you think Manaus compares with Phoenix. To help you, also look at this site here.
I thought that alot of the facts were interesting and took me by surprise. One of the facts i found most interesting was the number of texts sent and recieved each day. i never knew it was that much! My Another of the facts i found interesting was the fact that China would be the number one english speaking country soon. I didn’t actually expect it to be China i thought that it maybe would have been great Britain or something like that. My favourite fact however was the one on MySpace if considered a country, would be the 11th largest country in the world. It is amazing how many people use it! It just shows how popular MySpace is.
I think the most interesting fact is that Nintendo spent more money in 2002 on research and development than the U.S. Federal Government on research and innovation in education because this means that the U.S Federal Government must be spending most of the money they have on the military and defence.

There are alot of interesting and surprising facts in this slideshow. One of them on which i found interesting was that in India there are 1,100 people just like me. I thought wow…. that much people on who share the same interests as me!!
I never knew that was the number of text messages that were sent each day, it is incredible. I also found the fact about the Nintendo company spending more money on research than the American government did on schooling. Also I never thought China is going to become the biggest English speaking country in the world. I am surprised it wasen’t a country that was closer to Britian than China.
When I went to China it was amazing how clearly they spoke and understood the language my family and I spoke.

I think that the most surprising fact was that MySpace has 106 million registered users and that it was a country it would be the 11th largest country in the world. i just can’t begin to imagine how many people that is! i also liked the fact that there are 2.9 billion searches in google each month because i am always using google. i also thought that the number of text messages each day is larger that the whole population of the earth because i am always sending texts but i never really thought about everyone else doing the same as me. i was quite confused when i read that China would soon become the no.1 English speaking country because i had never really thought that China spoke much English. But i suppose that even a small amount of china’s population spoke English that would still be a lot of people.
i thought that the slide show had some very interesting facts which i would have never even thought about.

I think all these facts are pretty amazing. I think it is ubelievable how many babies are born every few minutes in the major countries. I think China is an outstanding country.
I never knew how many people used the computer for things like My space and online dating. Also how many texts are sent and how much google is used.
It is amzing how in counties like China and India there are over a thousand people who are just like me.
Well this is a very interesting power point. A lot of it I was Taken back by such as slide 31. This slide said that Nitendo is a multi million dollar company. They spent more in research in how to make kids play their video game system. They spent $180 million dollars in one year, more than the American Government who have more kids in schools than nintendo have kids using their consoles. That really suprised me.
Thanks for the comments; you all seem to be quite impressed by the statistics. Here’s some thoughts for you:
What are we to make of the fact that Ninteno spends more on research than the US government does on education? Is this the full story? Maybe lots of children in the US are educated privately? Does Nintendo have any business deals with schools?
When you say there are “1000 people just like me”, don’t take that literally-it’s a way of saying there are 1100 people in India for every 1 person in Britain. (ie divide the population of India by the population of the UK)
Or if so many people in China speak English, as George noticed, why should we spend so much time and money learning Chinese here in Scotland? Does the SQA need to bother having a Higher in Chinese? Or is it arrogant to assume people will always speak our language?
How many of the 2 billion plus Google searches are actually necessary-are wasting our lives “googling”?
i found the fact that if myspace was a country it would be the 11th largest in the world. I could only imagine where it would rank if the people who live in each country got removed from the count instead of being in myspace and their real country
Its amazing to think that my job in the future could be something that doesn’t exist at this moment. Thinking about it, when we are really old there will be jobs that we wont have a clue about. Also, in 2013 they say we shall have computers as smart as the human brain to do the work, so while the new jobs are being created the computers could be doing it for us!
